Nestled in the heart of Coral Gables, the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden offers a lush escape from the cityscape of Miami, Florida. With its sprawling 83-acre landscape, this botanical garden is a treasure trove of exotic plant life and immersive experiences for nature lovers, garden enthusiasts, and families alike. Whether you’re a seasoned horticulturist or simply someone looking to reconnect with nature, a visit to Fairchild promises to be an unforgettable journey.
Planning Your Visit
Before you do anything, download the Fairchild APP! I found their paper map to be a little confusing and I may or may not have gotten lost more than once…but it was a happy adventure to say the least! After downloading the app, I was able to navigate the grounds much more easily.
Bonus: the app provides plant identifiers as you explore the gardens.

Hours of Operation:
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and closed on December 25th. It’s always a good idea to check the garden’s website for any special hours or events.
Admission:
While admission prices may vary based on the time of year and specific events, general entry is usually around $25 for adults, with discounts for children, seniors, and residents of Miami-Dade County. Annual memberships are also available for frequent visitors.
What to Bring:
Comfortable walking shoes are a must—there’s a lot to see, and you’ll be doing a fair amount of walking. I wore a pair of Birkenstock sandals and was fine, but tennis shoes would have been better for exploring off the paved paths. Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat, especially if you’re visiting during the hot, sunny months. It’s also a good idea to bring a camera or smartphone to capture the stunning views!
Dining:
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens offers a restaurant on-site called Glasshouse Café, but you can also pack your own picnic and enjoy it in one of the garden’s shaded pavilions or picnic areas. It’s a perfect way to recharge before continuing your exploration.
I personally enjoyed lunch at the Glasshouse Café during my recent visit and highly recommend it. The weather was perfect for dining al fresco, but I chose to eat inside because it shares a glass wall with the Wings of the Tropics butterfly house.
How much time do you need to see the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden?
Guest services suggests 2.5 hours to tour the 83 acres. I would recommend even longer if you have time to relax and enjoy your experience here. There are plenty of benches and secluded areas to unwind and appreciate the natural beauty of this place.
Accessibility at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden
One of my favorite features of the Fairchild is their accessibility for guests with disabilities. There are wide paved paths throughout the grounds, automatic doors to facilities and a tram service to tour the property.
The tram is a welcome and relaxing alternative to walking the 83 acres of lush landscape. It does require some planning ahead to ensure availability, though.
I met with Jane, a kind and thoughtful guide at Fairchild, who explained to me that guests need to reserve a spot on the tram which I did while we were talking. With some time to spare, I took Jane’s advice to explore a little of the gardens on foot with the intention to return 10-15 minutes before my tram departure.
This is when I became hopelessly and happily lost in the rainforest. I missed the tram, but happened upon the group later as they slowly cruised by me and the Cannonball Tree. The guide sounded extremely informative and I wish I had been able to attend.
Keep in mind that there are plenty of unpaved paths (mulched or grass) that are open to guests to explore. The tram stays on the pavement, but if you are able to journey on foot-check out the myriad hidden trails through the gardens.

Everything at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is lovely to see and worth every second to explore. I do have my favorite spots, though, that make the Fairchild unique and shouldn’t be missed.
Make sure to see the Wings of the Tropics!
This might be my favorite experience at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. After a carefully orchestrated entrance through multiple doors, walk into a conservatory filled with butterflies from around the globe. Silent and colorful, these winged beauties flutter through the air in a magical dance. Feel your blood pressure drop as you take in the scenery of enchanting tropical plants and vibrant butterflies.
Take a moment and check out the display on your left after entering. Here you will find a window to the Vollmer Metamorphosis lab where the butterflies are hatching from their chrysalises. So unbelievably cool!
My recent visit was in January and a cold snap had many of the butterflies clinging to the undersides of the plants. Thankfully, as I made my way to the Wings of the Tropics, it warmed up enough that they became active and put on a fascinating display! The owl butterflies were enjoying their breakfast!
Walk slowly and carefully to protect these delicate beauties and to fully enjoy their mesmerizing peacefulness.
Do not miss the Richard H. Simons Rainforest!
Located near the Wings of the Tropics, the rainforest garden is also truly magnificent. I felt like I was transported to another country while exploring this lush and humid section. The thought and detail that goes into the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is evident at every turn.
The tropical plant choices are exotic and vibrant.
The water features are situated perfectly and are soothing to guests.
Visit the Cannonball Tree!
This might be one of the most fascinating trees on Earth. The Cannonball Tree or Couroupita guianensis is a member of the Brazil nut family. The pleasant smelling flower utilizes a strange U-shaped pollination process that deposits fertile pollen on the bees’ backs while they are collecting sterile pollen from below to take back to their larvae.
The fruit looks like clusters of cannonballs and when they fall and cack open, they are malodorous!
They’re difficult to find in the US because of their tropical growth requirements so make sure to see it at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden!
The Martha O. Clinton Children’s Garden is a must-see!
Even if you are not visiting with little ones, take a moment to see this imaginative natural children’s garden. Without a piece of plastic in sight, this small play area is comprised completely of natural material. In fact, I almost walked right past it!
An upturned tree is a bridge for climbing; a stump is smoothed to a seat or platform for jumping; a fallen tree trunk is carved into a tunnel for kiddos to crawl through.
It’s as if Peter Pan and the lost boys designed this play area!
The Lougheed Spiny Forest Madagascar can’t be missed!
When I first walked into this unique garden space, I thought perhaps it was a mistake and that the plants had died or something. The leafless trees and prickly plants appeared barren and weathered.
With the use of the app I downloaded earlier, I inspected the area more closely and discovered a fascinating landscape!
Go see the lakes!
Although there is plenty more to explore in the various garden spaces, save time to go see the lakes. The wide paved paths meander leisurely around ten different lakes.
There is abundant wildlife throughout the Fairchild, especially around the lakes. Their presence adds to the natural beauty of the landscape.
My first tip: Have your camera ready!
My second tip: Watch where you walk!
Waterfowl, iguanas, and other critters are roaming freely and deposit droppings along the way! Watch your step.
The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens and Education
As a former teacher and a mother of three, I am impressed by the dedication of the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden to education, conservation and botanical research. Botanical gardens by definition include collections of living plants for the purpose of education and research, and if you’re reading this blog-you can see that I have visited many!
The Fairchild’s mission statement reads: We harness the power of plants for humankind and share the joy and beauty of tropical gardening with everyone.
It should be noted the numerous avenues that the Fairchild extends their education and research into the community:
- K-12 programs for students including field trips, classroom resources and more
- The Fairchild Challenge (an international, award-winning environmental education program involving students and teachers)
- Workshops and teacher training
- Adult education programs on site for community members
- Million Orchid Project (a hands-on effort to restore native orchids involving students and volunteers)
- Internships and Research Opportunities for college students
